The threat of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is looming ever larger. But what people often don’t realise is just how effective changing to a healthy diet and lifestyle can be. This message must be communicated wherever possible. Effective prevention programmes require simple, tangible messages about the benefits of dietary and lifestyle changes.

What healthcare professionals should know about diet & lifestyle 

Over the long term, having an active lifestyle and eating right is more effective in preventing cardiovascular problems than any medication currently available. Yet healthcare professionals haven’t equipped themselves fully to take up the challenge of motivating patients towards dietary and lifestyle improvements.

The link between wellbeing & cardiovascular health

There is a lot of new information about how cardiovascular health can be improved. Many psychosocial factors including stress, anxiety, hostility, depression, or lack of social support have been associated with negative effects on cardiovascular health. Some directly, some indirectly, through behaviour that either negatively (smoking, excessive drinking) or positively (physical activity, relaxation exercises) influences health.

Maintaining diet & lifestyle changes to improve cardiovascular health

For long-term blood pressure management, a combined diet and lifestyle approach is essential. New and emerging dietary factors are being investigated, for instance fish oils, flavonoids, certain proteins and dairy peptides. An increase in blood pressure with age is avoidable, but will require a sustained healthy diet and lifestyle.
